Almost two thirds of young women in South Yorkshire have been sexually harassed at work.

A new survey's shown over 60% of women aged 18 to 24 have suffered things like inappropriate jokes, comments and unwanted touching in their workplace.

The TUC and the Everyday Sexism project - who jointly carried out the study - are now calling for action from employers and the government to tackle the issue.

Neil Foster, from TUC Yorkshire, says it's really shocking:

"These are really serious figures and I think it shows the true level of discrimination that many women experience at work. The stories behind what actually happens are really terrible so I think this is a wakeup call for men and women to take the issue much more seriously."

"I think it's terrible that younger women - 18 to 24 - nearly two thirds of them have experienced sexual harassment at work and so the idea that some people are more vulnerable and therefore more likely to experience this is terrible. It needs to be taken far more seriously and stamped out."

The survey also found almost 80% of women who've experienced sexual harassment at work didn't tell their employer about what was happening.

Laura Bates, founder of The Everyday Sexism Project, said:

“Many people would like to think that workplace sexual harassment is a thing of the past. In reality, it is alive and well, and having a huge impact on tens of thousands of women’s lives."

“These findings reveal the shameful extent of the problem and the reality of the touching, unwanted advances, and inappropriate comments women find themselves confronted with while simply trying to do their jobs.

“This is shameful behaviour that has no place in 2016 and employers need to take urgent action to tackle the problem.”
