Group of Sheffield mums determined to help Afghan refugees feel festive this year

We've been speaking to Dr. Shahd Salha as part of our investigation into what life is like for Afghan refugees who've recently arrived here

As we hear how Afghan refugees are resettling in South Yorkshire - a group of mums in Sheffield tell us they're determined to make them feel part of celebrations this Christmas.

Twenty volunteers from 'Mums United' have been working hard in the community to gather local donations - since the Taliban took over in Afghanistan.

They're planning to distribute around forty Christmas hampers next week.

Dr. Shahd Salha is from the organisation:

"We'll be putting hand-made scarves, hats and really warm stuff in the box.

"Also, we'll be putting some toiletries and pampering stuff in there, as well as a few toys and books.

"Twenty parcels will go to Sheffield and another twenty will go to Rotherham.

"We can't replace the families of these Afghan people, but we can be there for them and make sure they aren't alone."

Meanwhile, Dr. Shahd Salha insists the temporary housing on offer for Afghan refugees in the UK is no better than a 'five-star prison':

"It should be a lot better than it is. These people are trapped, isolated and secluded almost-it's unfair.

"The families shouldn't have to feel like this so soon after fleeing Kabul."

"That's why we're doing our best to try and help these people and their children settle in here."

The Home Office says they expect high standards from their accommodation providers and any concerns can be raised with liaison officers on the ground.
