A Sheffield councillor has asked if a 20mph zone in Sheffield should be expanded to include nearby accident spots.

The city council finance and performance policy committee yesterday (December 15) approved additional spending of £54,500 on signage for a Bradway 20mph scheme. This has already been approved by the transport, regeneration and climate committee.

A report to the committee said that introducing 20mph zones in residential areas will contribute to creating a safer environment, which will allow easier access to local facilities for all.

“This in turn promotes healthier lifestyles whilst encouraging vibrancy in local areas and supports access to public transport.”

Work is due to start in January 2026. The full cost of the project is £92,300.

Coun Phipps asked why Bradway Road, Twentywell Lane and Abbeydale Road South had not been included. He said this is where the majority of collisions take place.

Transport programmes manager David Ripley said that the 20mph schemes are sign-only, so larger roads would not be included.

The only one that includes an average speed camera is on Abbeydale Road but this is because it’s been provided as part of a larger road safety scheme.

Other road safety plans include a budget increase of £91,800 to change plans for a zebra crossing on Creswick Lane, Grenoside to to a parallel crossing. This will allow both pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely.

Another £105,000 spending was approved for feasibility and preliminary design works for a pedestrian crossing on Clarkson Street, Broomhall. An Active Travel grant from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority totalling £400,000 will be used to fund the project.
