A "vile" sex attacker has been jailed for more than 15 years after assaulting a woman in Barnsley.

Steven Kerley, 36 and of Park View in Brierley, was arrested in May 2021 following the attack on a 25-year-old woman.

He was found guilty of a number of offences, including assault by penetration and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, in April.

Kerley has been sentenced to 21 years, made up of 18 years in jail and an extension period of three years.

The officer in charge of the case, DC Rosie O'Grady, said: "Kerley’s vile actions have no place in society, and I am pleased that he has been jailed for a long time.

"I hope that this result gives confidence to other survivors of sexual assault in South Yorkshire to come forward."
