A Sheffield man has been jailed for eight months after shouting racial abuse and trying to headbutt police officers.

49 year old Paul Ward, of Firshill Walk, was handed a 34 week sentence last week (October 17) a Sheffield Magistrates'' Court.

He was arrested for being drunk and disorderly on the High Street in July.

He tried to attack officers as he was lead to a police van, aiming kicks and a headbutt.

In a separate incident in May he racially abused an officer while he was being transported to custody.

He admitted to two counts of assault by beating an emergency worker and one count of common assault of an emergency worker, also admitting to a racially / religiously aggravated public order offence.

Sergeant Simon Pickering, of South Yorkshire Police, said:

"Ward is a prolific offender who has continued to ignore restrictions placed upon him by the courts.

"Incidents of racial abuse and assaults on members of our team are taken extremely seriously.

"I'm really pleased with the outcome of this case which is a great result as part of our ongoing operation to make Sheffield city centre a safer place for everyone to work, visit, and live."
