A man in his 70s has died following a fire at a block of flats in Sheffield.

Five fire crews were called to the blaze on Martin Street on Friday evening.

Neighbours raised the alarm just after 6pm - several teams went in to tackle the fire which was in a flat on the fifth floor.

A man in his 70s died and a number of surrounding flats had to be evacuated as a precaution.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have given us the following statement.............

A man has died following a fire at a block of flats in Sheffield.

Five fire engines and a turntable ladder attended the incident on Martin Street shortly after 6pm on Friday after neighbours raised the alarm.

Several teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the block flats, with the fire confined to one flat on the fifth floor.

The occupant, a man in his 70s, was sadly found to have died. No one else is thought to have lived at the property.

There was some smoke logging to the rest of the fifth floor and a small number of people were evacuated as a precaution.

Crews from Central, Rivelin, Parkway, Birley and Elm Lane fire stations attended the incident.

A multi-agency investigation into the cause of the fire will take place to determine the cause of the fire.
