Man arrested after bomb squad called to Barnsley
A cordon is in place around Brierly Road in Grimethorpe
A 58-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences after a bomb disposal unit was called to Barnsley this morning.
The army and police remain on the scene on Brierly Road in Grimethorpe, where a raid was carried out just after 07:00BST on Wednesday (May 08).
People living nearby have been asked to leave their homes and an 100m cordon is in place around the road.
Assistant Chief Constable David Hartley, gold commander, said: "Public safety is our top priority.
"We are working together with our partners to build up a full picture of the circumstances surrounding this incident and the suspicious items which have been found.
"This could take some time and we remain grateful to the public for their cooperation, patience and understanding as we carry out this critical work."
One man who lives in the road told Greatest Hits Radio it could be 22:00BST before people are allowed back into their home.
Another resident, a woman, said it was "like nothing" she'd ever seen in the area.
