The club put a statement on its website last night, saying:
"We have been advised by Lee Johnson that he wishes to join Bristol City.
"Barnsley Football Club have accepted his decision and agreed proper compensation with Bristol City.
"We are very grateful to Lee for his hard work and commitment at Barnsley Football Club, which culminated in us reaching the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.
"We wish him every success in his new role.
"For the time being, Paul Heckingbottom and Tommy Wright will take responsibility for first-team matters.
"The Club will make further statements to fans as appropriate."
