Brits looking for a bank holiday city break should look north for a better deal, according to travel website TripAdvisor.

Trips to southern cities were found to cost almost double the price of their northern counterparts, with Sheffield clinching top spot for the best bargain when considering a trip in the upcoming bank holiday weekend.

Sheffield, which claims to be the UK's greenest city, offers those looking for a three-night trip a £614 bargain, half the price of an equivalent stay in London which costs an eye-watering £1,331.

The south Yorkshire city is joined in the top 10 cheapest destinations by fellow northern powerhouses Liverpool, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Leeds, Chester and Glasgow.

Sheffield, the birthplace of well-known Brits such as Jessica Ennis, Jarvis Cocker and Michael Palin, draws in the tourists with cheap hotels and dinners.

In contrast, London tops the priciest list for several categories, including taxis, dinners and attractions.
