Weather dependent businesses in South Yorkshire forced to let staff down due to the recent rain

Many had been expecting a rise in trade because of half-term

Businesses across South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire tell us 'it's horrible' having to let members of staff down because of the inconsistent weather.

A lot of cafes had been expecting a boost in trade this week over half term - but some employees have had their shifts cancelled because of how rainy it's been recently.

Café Manager Vanessa Hamilton tells us it's led to her having to cancel 5 shifts so far this week:

"It's not nice taking people's shifts away from them because of the weather.

"Loads of park cafes are the same; it's just how the cookie crumbles, it's awful.

"We do keep a record of when we have to cancel staff shifts, it is a horrible job.

"The other day when it rained on Tuesday, we had to cancel shifts for 4 people.

"It has been a bit unpredictable. We check the weather the previous day, in terms of our staffing levels, and we try to get the number of staff we need for the business that we're expecting.

"It has been a good week; however, it's not been as busy as it has been in the past.

"2-3 weeks ago, we had a bit of a heatwave out of the school holidays, and I had to get in extra staff every day because it was that hot.

"We are, as a business, very weather dependent."

The weather is expected to improve across South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire over the weekend.
