Some people have been allowed to return to their homes following a bomb disposal unit being called out to a village near Barnsley on Wednesday (May 08).

Investigations are continuing in Brierly Road in Grimethorpe, where an 100m cordon has been reduced to 60m.

However, police expect that to now stay in place for 72 hours, extending the time those within it may have to stay in alternative accommodation.

Officers have also arrested a second person - a woman aged 57 - on suspicion of firearms offences.

A 58-year-old man is also in custody.

Assistant Chief Constable David Hartley, gold commander, said: "Our heartfelt thanks go to the local residents of Grimethorpe for their continuing cooperation and patience as we carry out our work.

"We know this has caused disruption to people's daily lives and appreciate your understanding that public safety must come first. We will continue to update you as we have more information to share."

A refuge centre has been set up at St. Luke's Church for anyone who cannot find a place to stay.
