A former South Yorkshire peer will go on trial later this year accused of sexual offences against children when he was a teenager.

Nazir Ahmed, a former Labour peer who was Lord Ahmed of Rotherham before he resigned from the House of Lords last year, will go on trial at Sheffield Crown Court in November.

He is accused of sexually abusing a boy and a girl in the early 1970s.

Ahmed, 64, denies two counts of attempting to rape a girl under 16, indecent assault of a boy under 14 and buggery of a boy under 16.

His brothers, Mohammed Farouq and Mohammed Tariq, are accused of indecently assaulting a boy under 14, but were deemed unfit to plead at an earlier hearing.

During a brief hearing at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday, Mr Justice Lavender set a trial date for November 16.

The trial is expected to last between three to four weeks and there will be a further hearing in October.
