An investigation is underway after a car was driven on to a community football pitch in Sheffield overnight and set on fire.

The pitch at Sheffield Wednesday's Community Programme facility, which cost just under £1m was opened just 3 weeks ago.

It's used by teams across the city.

Marcus Brameld is head of community at Sheffield Wednesday, he said:

"Last night we were targetted by someone who's destroyed our pitch at the Jubilee Centre. A car has been driven onto the pitch and been set alight.

"Everyone is obviously deflated and upset by what happened, but we will get this back up and running and make it a fantastic facility like it has been for the past 3 weeks."

A Police spokesperson said:

"We were called at 5.35pm yesterday (22 January) yesterday to reports that a car had been driven onto the artificial grass pitch at the Jubilee Sports and Social Club on Clay Wheels Lane in Sheffield, and set alight.

"Officers attended, alongside the fire service, and it was found that the vehicle, a black Toyota Yaris, had been abandoned on the pitch before being set on fire. The vehicle was previously reported as stolen."
