A former Labour councillor has pleaded not guilty to assault and will face trial in 2027.

David Shaw, aged 59, of Bennetthorpe, Doncaster, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm following an incident in Doncaster on June 21, 2025.

Neil Coxon, prosecuting, requested a trial of two days be arranged, but told the court there was suggestion Shaw had acted in “self-defence”.

Shaw was a Labour councillor representing town ward on the City of Doncaster Council until May 2025.

Shaw did not run for office at the elections, which preceded the events relating to his assault charge. Labour’s candidates for the ward were Gemma Cobby, Majid Khan and Rob Dennis, all of whom were elected.
