The end of the furlough scheme could prove to be an 'unwelcome problem' across South Yorkshire

It's as the Government's job support retention scheme winds up today

Many people across South Yorkshire face an uncertain week ahead, with the furlough scheme due to finish today.

Around thirty-one thousand people across the region are still on the job retention programme, which was brought in by the Government during the pandemic in 2020.

Shaun Duffy from Citizens Advice Sheffield reckons it'll lead to a lot of difficult conversations between some employers and their staff:

"Our worry is that the end of this scheme's going to affect those people particularly in vulnerable employment, that do tend to work for smaller employers, and therefore may not be able to cope with the consequences of the end of furlough.

"Unfortunately, a lot these conversations between employers and employees will be about redundancies or potentially a change in terms and conditions.

"In those circumstances, it's important to speak about things as soon as possible to reduce any unnecessary worry.

"There's so many things cropping up at the moment, when you look at the Universal Credit cuts, the spike in energy prices and the ongoing fuel problems we're seeing.

"We're absolutely inundated right now, and this will be yet another unwelcome problem which our communities will simply have to face."
