A Sheffield man has jailed after crashing into a police car during a chase earlier this year.

27 year old Ashley Gibson, formerly of Edge Well Crescent, was spotted driving erratically on the Sheffield Parkway on the April 12 this year.

Officers attempted to pull him over but he instead sped off towards Handsworth.

His car was followed into Doveholes Drive, where Gibson found himself trapped in a cul-de-sac.

He hit several parked cars and a brick pillar before ramming a police car in a final bid to escape.

Gibson was arrested and later admitted charges of dangerous driving, escaping lawful custody, criminal damage, drink driving and driving without a licence or insurance.

He's been jailed for 23 months at Sheffield Crown Court. He's also been disqualified from driving for four years and will have to sit an extended re-test.

Sergeant Scott Sarson of South Yorkshire Police, said: “Gibson’s actions showed little regard for the safety of anyone else on the roads.

“I hope this sentence gives him a chance to think about his behaviour and prompts him to think twice before acting so recklessly again.”
