Doncaster is bidding to become a city as part of celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee next year.

Doncaster Council says it wants to become one of the towns who receives the honour, and is officially starting its bid.

It's after bidding to become the home for the new Great British Railways (GBR), bringing jobs and investment outside of London.

In a statement, the council said: "Team Doncaster, which is made up the main public sector organisations and business across the borough, is putting the city status bid together to showcase how proud we are of Doncaster, our achievements, our future aspirations and to outline why we think our wonderful borough should be given this accolade.

"We’ve been waiting a long time – this will be our fourth attempt and we believe the time is right, given how far we have come, that Doncaster City becomes a reality. "

Mayor Ros Jones, who is chair of the Team Doncaster partnership, said: “I am immensely proud of Doncaster and I want it to become one of the UK’s newest cities. We have a 10 year plan Team Doncaster is working to drive this borough forward, brightening all our futures. I know Doncaster is already on the map for so many brilliant things and certainly this royal stamp of approval will boost our fortunes even further.

“We want to welcome people to a vibrant city in 2022 and city status will help us on our journey to more great things for this borough. So please back our bid!”

The council has until early December to make its case.
