"We're taking methods into our own hands" over airport future, says South Yorkshire mayor
Oliver Coppard is searching for investors in Doncaster Sheffield Airport amid a review of its commercial viability
The Mayor of South Yorkshire says his team are "taking methods into our own hands" over the future of Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
Oliver Coppard has accused current owners The Peel Group of trying to "run down the clock" after it announced a review of the airport's future.
They have concerns over the commercial viability, and in a statement released today, have claimed it has never turned a profit.
It said "The Peel Group has striven tirelessly to achieve a viable operation" since DSA opened in 2005.
But it claims changes in the regional aviation market, and the withdrawal of Wizz Air, means it may be no longer possible to operate the airport.
A review that was due to come to an end earlier this month has been extended for three weeks. but local leaders say that doesn't give enough time to find possible solutions.
In a tweet, South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said: "Peel have given us no clarity over their intentions while expecting us to come up with ideas for ways forward.
"A few weeks is far too short to develop meaningful plans and Peel are wasting valuable time."
More than 100,000 people have signed a petition calling for the airport to remain open, and Don Valley MP Nick Fletcher has asked for a debate in Parliament on the issue.
