A 75-year-old man from Doncaster has been jailed for 19 years for 12 counts of child rape dating back to the 1970s.

John Caddle, of Hardy Road, appeared before Sheffield Crown Court today where he was sentenced to 19 years in jail and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Caddle denied the offences that spanned a six-year period during the 1970s. He was found guilty by a jury following a trial in October 2015.

Detective Sergeant Laura Jones said: "The victim in this case has shown exceptional bravery to come forward and report this abuse, years after suffering at the hands of Caddle.

"She has had to live with this horrendous abuse over a number of decades and I hope today's sentencing can go some way to help her to rebuild her life.

"Caddle's despicable behaviour started when his victim was a vulnerable child and he continued to carry out this horrendous abuse for a number of years.

"It is testament to the courage of the victim that he is now facing 19 years behind bars."

The court heard that Caddle regularly engaged in sexual activity with a child under the age of 16.

The victim told police about the abuse in June 2013 and Caddle was arrested and a full investigation carried out.
