A Doncaster charity which takes people to and from hospital for lifesaving cancer treatment has been targeted by thieves.

Firefly provides transport for people needing treatment like radiotherapy. But after thieves stole part of their vehicles' exhaust system, nearly 30 patients were left having to make alternative arrangements today.

"Today we had 26 patients and the majority of those had to make their own way there," says Director Ian Bacchus.

"We're there to relieve the stress and strain and the financial implications for them having their treatment. And for us not to be able to provide that is a big blow for us actually.

"I'm gobsmacked really because on the side of the vehicle it states what the vehicle is used for. And for people to do this - they're just lowlife scum."

Ian says the service will be back up and running tomorrow, with two vehicles back on the road.

He's thanked drivers who've used their own vehicles to ensure patients got to their treatments in Sheffield today: "It's heartwarming. It's amazing after such a shcoking phonecall and then to realise people get on to you straight away.

"Friends of friends and people I've not even spoken to before were phoning up offering their help. So it's fantastic and hopefully the wheels will be turning tomorrow with Firefly."
