Detectives investigating two shootings in Mexborough in the space of 24 hours want to reassure people there.

Officers were called out on Thursday night after a shot was fired through the downstairs window of a house on Victoria road.

It was after they'd been to reports of gunshots the day before on Frederick street which is about a five minute drive away.

No-one was hurt in either incident.

Police have told us they think the same weapon might have been used in both incidents.

Detective Inspector Mark Monteiro said:

"We're clearly investigating two offences over two different nights involving a discharge of a firearm. I think I would be surprised if there was more than one weapon, one firearm, on the streets. But as a result of being at the very early start of an investigation that's something we'll be able to further clarify in the coming days."

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward but also want to reassure people living and working nearby.

Patrols in the area have been stepped up, including more armed and mounted officers.

They've also told us they think these were 'targeted' and that there's "no wider threat to the community".

DI Monteiro added:

"We've got some significant resources working in relation to that incident. The family are safe and out of the area at this time. We are continuing with a significant number of enquiries to find out what sits behind this offending and obviously who those offenders are.
