Police have arrested three men in connection with damage and tampering to a grave at a Rotherham churchyard earlier this month.

Officers have spent days investigating the scene at All Saints in Laughton-en-le-Morthen, near to Dinnington.

Two 25-year-old men and a 53-year-old man are being questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal damage and causing a public nuisance.

They remain in police custody as the investigation continues.

The graveyard has now reopened.

Next-of-kin of the deceased have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

Detective Inspector Lucy Garside, leading the investigation for South Yorkshire Police, said:

"This would have been an extremely distressing and concerning time for those who have loved ones also in the church yard.

"I would like to thank everyone for their support and understanding around this sensitive matter, especially those who could not visit the church yard during this time."
