Child sexual exploitation in Rotherham: the background

Published 17th Oct 2016

The conviction today of eight men for their part in child sex abuse in Rotherham has once again put sexual exploitation of children in the town back in the spotlight.

It's something that's dominated the news agenda in Rotherham for years. But how did the scandal unfold? Here are the key dates:

2012 - Investigations by The Times newspaper suggested the number of children being abused by gangs of Aisan men in Rotherham was more widespread than previously acknowleged.

2013 - Rotherham Council comissioned Alexis Jay to conduct an independent inquiry into the problem in Rotherham.

2014 - Jay published her findings in The Jay Report which revealed the true scale of abuse - over 1400 children were abused in the town between 1997 and 2013.

2014 - The government set up another independent inquiry to investigate whether Rotherham Council had covered up information about the abuse. It was to be led by Lousie Casey.

2015 - Casey published her findings - stating the CSE team on Rotherham Council was poorly directed, suffered from excessive case loads, and did not share information. Eric Pickles declared the council "not fit for purpose" and brought in five comisioners to take control away from the councillors.

2016 - The first part of Operation Clover - the Police's investigation into the issue - saw a gang jailed for a total of more than 100 years.

2016 - The second part of Operation Clover saw 8 men found guilty of 19 offences relating to child sexual abuse in Rotherham.
