A health expert from South Yorkshire claims that children should be taught more in school about obesity, in a bid to stop overweight people being bullied.

Dr Stuart Flint has been doing some research looking at discrimination and the stigma around it, and found young men and people who exercise often are most likely to mistreat someone who is seen as being fat.

He said:

“I think it should be a topic engaged with by young people in schools. There’s been a push towards increasing education surrounding body image, and the dangers of body image, so I don't see why there wouldn't be an inclusion of obesity stigmatisation as part of that element of the curriculum.

“My research demonstrates obesity stigma and discrimination is being reported more; there's more instances for example of people being overlooked for jobs and promotions as well as instances of bullying in schools.”
