Boris Johnson confirmed that Doncaster is in line to get funding for a new hospital, after the area was missed out in previous announcements.

The PM was responding to a question in Parliament from the Don Valley MP Nick Fletcher.

The government has previously announced plans to build 40 new hospitals up and down the country.

Now - the Boris Johnson says the Doncaster & Bassetlaw NHS Trust is being considered as the site of one of eight new specialist hospitals.

Mr Johnson said: “I mentioned my honourable friend is a fantastic advocate of Doncaster and he is right to campaign in the way that he does.

“I wish I could give him a cut and dry yes or no answer today, but I can tell him that his local trust is very much in the running in the current open competition for the next eight hospitals on top of the 40 that we’re already building.”

Doncaster Council has already secured land on the town's waterfront, next to Doncaster College, for a major new higher education facility.

It will be used to help educate the next generation of healthcare workers.
