A Barnsley man has been handed an 11 year sentence for the sexual abuse of a young girl.

Between 1989 and 1992, now 57 year old Sean Gamble groomed his victim, offering her cigarettes before sexually abusing and raping her.

His victim came forward years later.

Gamble, of Dawcroft Avenue, was found guilty of two counts of rape of a girl under the age of 16 and six counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14 at Sheffield Crown Court in May.

He was sentenced at the same court yesterday.

Temporary Detective Sergeant Laura Clarke, of South Yorkshire Police, said:

"I hope this result shows that it is never too late to disclose if you are a victim of sexual offences and rape. We will thoroughly investigation any reports and try and secure justice.

"This sentence will not undo what Gamble subjected his victim to at the time of offending, and the years of emotional trauma after, but I hope it allows her to start to move forward with her life.

"I would like to commend her bravery of coming forward and reliving these awful experiences, which has resulted in Gamble being locked up for a long period of time, and I hope she finds comfort in this."
