People who've experienced baby loss in South Yorkshire are being urged not to go through the grief process alone.

Sheffield's Still Birth & Neonatal Death society are re-starting their face-to-face group sessions this week following the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sarah Axe joined the group after losing her baby daughter Isla 8 years ago:

"When a baby dies, and you don't take that baby home, very few people have met that baby, very few people will know what to say about that baby, and that's really difficult for everybody involved.

"Our aim at Sheffield SANDS (Still Birth & Neonatal Death society) is to make sure that nobody goes through this in isolation.

"Fourteen babies every day in this country don't go home to their families, so that's fourteen sets of devastated parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles etc.

"Your world comes crashing down, but if you get help, it will be the bravest first step you ever make.

"It's really daunting to come forward, but there's not one person in that room who hasn't made that step before.

"We have people that lost last week, and we have others who lost fifty-five years ago.

"We have men and women, which's important because a lot of dads can get forgotten in the process.

"We're also open to grandparents and other family members; anybody who's been affected by loss."

Their first physical meeting since the start of the coronavirus pandemic is due to take place at St. Mary's Church on Bramall Lane in Sheffield between 7pm-9.30pm on Thursday.
