Music fans and those who visited the nightclub The Leadmill in Sheffield were today (31st March) shocked to find that the iconic venue may no longer be a part of the music scene in the city. The campaign #WeCantLoseLeadmill was launched with a plea for those who frequented the venue to share happy memories in a bid to convince the owners of the building not to evict The Leadmill.
The Leadmill is the longest running live music venue and nightclub in Sheffield and hosts live music, club nights and freshers events through the year. The Leadmill opened in 1980 in and was a former flour mill (despite the name suggesting otherwise).
In efforts to save The Leadmill, a plea was issued by their social media team alongside a photo of the venue. They wrote: 'Landlord to evict The Leadmill and force us out of business.
'Today we have received some devastating news that in 1 year's time, our Landlord is trying to evict us, forcing us to close.
'Since 1980 The Leadmill has spent millions of pounds on what was a derelict warehouse, transforming it into one of the U.K’s most respected venues where countless acts from across the globe have performed over the years.
'Please show your support by sharing this news & sharing your best memories that we can gather to help show them reasons why #WeCantLoseLeadmill'.
The venue has hosted music and comedy acts over the year, as well as being a nightclub. The Leadmill was also awarded a Music Heritage Award in 2015.
The venue had faced hardships following closures in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, but had resumed operating music and club nights.
