Coronation Street has been an incredibly popular soap with viewers since it first aired way back in 1960, but in recent years bosses have been accused of making up dark and depressing storylines for the cast.

As a number of high profile stars have chosen to leave the show, including actress Catherine Tyldesley, bosses have reportedly come up with a new plan to stop any further departures.

According to new reports, bosses at Corrie will give certain cast members more input on their storylines, even letting them write their own in some cases.

Catherine Tyldesley, who plays Eva Price on the soap, announced she's decided to quit the cobbles back in December.

Speaking at the time, Catherine said, "Coronation Street has been a dream job for me which is why this was such a difficult decision to leave.

"Eva has been such fun to play over the last seven years, and who knows, one day she might storm the cobbles of Weatherfield again. In the meantime I’m excited about the future, new acting projects, and spending time with my family."

As well as Catherine, former winner of The X Factor Shayne Ward is set to leave the soap later in the year, in what bosses say will be an 'explosive storyline'.

Speaking about Shayne's exit, an insider said, "Everybody wants Shayne leaving to be a huge part of the show next year.

“Bosses are working on it at the moment and have something really explosive planned for the character."

After announcing her pregnancy with her footballer boyfriend Scott Sinclair in December, actress Helen Flanagan is also set to take a break for maternity leave later in the year.

Malcolm Hebden, who plays loveable actor Norris Cole, is also on an extended break from the show as he recovers from some recent health issues.

Lets hope the new plan works and no more big names leave the soap!

Coronation Street airs on ITV on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
