The youngest school children across Wales can return to the classroom from today.

Despite Wales remaining in lockdown - pupils aged 3 to 7 are returning to school this week.

Local authorities have the flexibility to decide exactly when they can start depending on local factors like covid rates in their area.

As long as cases continue to fall, the Welsh Government has earmarked March 15th for a return for the remainder of primary aged children and some older pupils.

Welsh teaching unions are urging caution, however, saying they want the impact of the return of younger students to be looked at first before committing to getting any more children back to school.

Plaid Cymru has also made a fresh call for teachers to be given priority for the coronavirus vaccine.

Shadow Minister for Education Sian Gwenllian says the safety of school staff and children must be the "number one priority".

She's also called on ministers to be 'fully transparent' with the latest scientific advice ahead of the return of any other year groups and says the Welsh Governemnt should be ready to 'quickly close' individual schools should clusters start to appear.

She said: "The safety of school staff and children must be the number one priority as schools prepare to open to more children this week.

"Getting our children back to face-to-face learning is incredibly important but this should be driven by the data.

"We expect the Government to be fully transparent with the latest scientific advice it receives ahead of the return of any further cohorts -- and ready to quickly close individual schools should clusters start to appear.

"The Labour Government should fully support calls for school staff be given priority for the vaccine within their age groups. Safety measures should emphasise adequate ventilation of school buildings.

"Meanwhile, the digital divide still exists for those who are yet to return, and Government must double its efforts to ensure that every child and young person is fully engaging in their schoolwork. "
