The Welsh Affairs Committee will consider a proposal to pilot Universal Basic Income (UBI) as its inquiry into the Welsh benefits system continues.

UBI would see different schemes introduced where the state provides unconditional income for citizens to cover essential living costs, regardless of their other income.

MPs will look at arguments both for and against UBI as well as the implications of the Welsh Government's pilot scheme targeted at young people leaving care.

The Committee will also examine the potential for UBI to reduce poverty and it's macroeconomic impact, while they will compare the system to other means of supporting people with social-economic needs.

The MPs considering UBI will take evidence from representatives of Robert Gordon University, the University of Birmingham, the New Economics Foundation, and UBILab Wales.

In an interview with our reporter, Emma Grant, UBILab Wales' Jonathan Williams said a Universal Basic Income system would "go a long way in alleviating poverty for a significant number of people."
