Wales keeps PCR testing despite new UK travel rules
Travellers returning to the country must still take a PCR test

PCR tests are no longer needed for those returning to the UK from abroad, but they must still be taken in Wales.
The news comes after the UK Government confirmed its plans to relax travel rules and make it "easier and cheaper" to travel internationally.
The Welsh Government said they are mostly in line with the new UK travel rules and have agreed to simplify the travel traffic light system.
Green, amber and red lists have been scrapped, with countries now either being on the red list or not.
Wales will also align with the removal of the requirement for a pre-departure Covid test for those who are fully vaccinated.
However, the Welsh Government has disagreed with the decision to scrap a day 2 PCR test in favour of a lateral flow test for those arriving into the UK.
A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “The existing rules around testing after travel currently still apply meaning day 2 PCR tests are a requirement for returning travellers. We are concerned about the decision to move away from these tests, which are a vital part of our surveillance for coronavirus and the identification of new variants.
We are continuing to press the UK Government for further detail of how the revised testing regime will work. We require assurances regarding reduced levels of surveillance and the ability to protect our borders against any new variants.”
Day 2 PCR tests are still required in England at the moment, with an exact date for when they will stop being required not yet being confirmed by the UK Government.
Eluned Morgan, Minister for Health and Social Services, has called on the UK Government to reconsider the decision:
"The decision to move away from PCR tests from returning travellers on day two is concerning. This test, combined with genetic sequencing of all positive tests, is a vital part of our surveillance for coronavirus and protects our borders from the virus.
We recognise the communication and enforcement challenges in having different testing requirements, and continue to thoroughly examine the evidence for a Wales-only testing regime, but the strongest solution to protect public health is for the UK government to reinstate UK-wide testing."
