More than 20% of employers praise veterans for strong leadership skills

Research indicates that employers who have hired veterans report significant contributions to their workforce

The Forces Employment Charity has revealed that the number of employers actively seeking to hire veterans has increased by over 20% in the last five years.

These new figures, released to coincide with Armed Forces Day on the 29th of June, highlight a growing recognition of the value that veterans bring to the workforce.

The data shows that the number of employers looking to hire veterans rose from 2,981 in 2018 to 3,603 in 2023.

Over the past year, the charity supported 23,000 members of the military community, securing 13,246 work placements compared to 11,994 the previous year—a more than 10% year-on-year increase.

Research indicates that employers who have hired veterans report significant contributions to their workforce.

Julianne Williams is an RAF veteran from South Wales - she's told us those who've served can provide huge benefits to companies.

"If they've got to be there at a certain time, they'll be there ten minutes early because that's what they're always expected to do.

"They have transferrable skills that are second to none."

Nearly a quarter (24%) of employers praise veterans for their strong leadership skills, while 22% commend their team-building abilities.

Additionally, 22% highlight the unique skills veterans possess, and 20% affirm that hiring a veteran is good for business.

Armed Forces Day, which takes place on the last Saturday of June, falls this year on June 29.

It offers a chance to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, including currently serving personnel, service families, veterans, and cadets.

This day marks the culmination of a week of celebrations beginning on June 24, where the public haver a chance to express their appreciation for the Armed Forces community.
