Teenagers seriously injured in gas explosion in Merthyr

Two teenagers are in hospital with serious injuries after an explosion at a house in South Wales.

South Wales Police say they attended reports of the incident which occurred in a house in Dowlais, Merthyr at approximately 10.30pm last night.

A cordon was put in place and a missing section of the side of the house can be clearly seen from the roadside.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said five people were evacuated from the house and transported to hospital.

Local Policing Inspector Jon Duckham said: “A number of properties on Glanmor Gardens were evacuated due to damage caused.

“Two people, a 19-year-old man and a 18-year-old woman, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“Our thoughts are with those affected by this incident.

“I would like to thank the community of Dowlais for their patience, support and understanding to those affected and our staff at the scene.”

South Wales Police said the cause of the explosion remains under investigation and they are working closely with the Health and Safety Executive.
