Teenage motorcyclist dies after attempted police traffic stop in Swansea
A second driver was also injured in the collision
South Wales Police has referred itself to the police watchdog after a teenage motorcyclist died following an attempted traffic stop in Swansea.
The 19 year old died at the scene of the collision on St Helen's Road shortly after 8.00pm Friday Night.
The collision involved a motorcycle and another vehicle, both being driven by members of the public.
The driver of the second vehicle was also injured and taken to hospital.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has opened an investigation.
An IOPC spokesperson said:
"We can confirm we have opened an independent investigation relating to a fatal collision that occurred on Friday night shortly after 8 pm on St Helen's Road, Swansea.
"The collision involved a motorcycle and another vehicle, both being driven by members of the public, following an attempted traffic stop by South Wales Police.
"The motorcyclist sadly died at the scene and the driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital for treatment.
"The force informed us of the incident and we sent investigators to the scene and to the post incident procedures.
"Our thoughts are with the bereaved family at this difficult time and we have been in touch with them to offer our condolences and explain our role.
"We will also be in touch with the driver of the other vehicle involved. Our investigation is at a very early stage."
A spokesperson for South Wales Police said:
"We can confirm that a 19-year-old man has died following a fatal collision that occurred last night on St Helens Road, Swansea.
"The matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and we are co-operating with their independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
"Our thoughts are with the man’s family and we are providing support to them at this difficult time."
