The First Minister has thanked emergency services after wind speeds of 93mph hit Wales, causing disruption across the country.

National Grid has said more than 55,000 customers have no power supply across the South West, South Wales and the West Midlands due to Storm Darragh - with the majority of those in South Wales.

Millions of people across the UK were advised to stay indoors as a "risk to life" alert came in to force on Saturday morning (7th December).

In an online post, First Minister Eluned Morgan said: "Our thanks go to the emergency services and responders who have been working through the night in dreadful conditions.

"Warnings remain in place, so please remain vigilant, and look out for each other."

A Cardiff resident described a "superb effort" from a council that cleared a tree that fell during Storm Darragh, breaking windows and damaging the wall around a property.

Stuart Cox, 64, told the PA news agency that an approximately 50ft mature tree on Cathedral Road in the Welsh capital fell into his next door neighbour's garden in the early hours of Saturday.

"It broke one window two doors down and destroyed next door's gate. The only damage to ours was the front wall was forced sideways, making the wall unstable and unable to shut the gate," the accountant said.

"The council teams moved to us, after clearing other trees, around 5.30am and were all done by 8am. Superb effort."

Amber and yellow alerts for wind and rain remain in place until 6pm on Sunday (8th December).

Rail networks warn of travel disruption across the country into the weekend and are advising people to check before they leave home.
