Wales needed a late Gareth Bale penalty to draw 1-all with the USA in their opening match at the World Cup.

The captain ensured Cymru avoided defeat as they played their first match at the tournament since 1958.

Despite a poor first half, boss Rob Page says Wales finished strongly. He said:

"It as important that we didn't lose it, we didn't have to win it but it was important we didn't lose.

"It's a really important point for us and I thought that in the last 10 minutes if anyone was going to go on and get the winner it was going to be us."

Wales captain Gareth Bale said: "Personally it was great to get a goal but the most important thing is that the team scores and does what we need.

"In terms of the huddle after the game that's just something we do especially in major tournaments we need to keep the momentum going, recover and then go again."

Up next in Group B is Iran on Friday followed by England on Tuesday.
