Quarry Fall: Boy Killed and Girl Critical
Teenagers fell in 100ft limestone quarry near Pontypool
A 15-year-old boy was killed and a 14-year-old girl is fighting for her life after a fall into a 100ft quarry.
The young pair went to the limestone quarry after school - but mystery surrounds how they fell.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene and the girl was airlifted to hospital by helicopter.
The pair fell "a significant distance" at a limestone quarry in Abersychan, near Pontypool, on Wednesday evening.
Two helicopters were sent to search the quarry and the girl was winched on board before she was taken to hospital in Cardiff.
Gwent Police said: "We received a report of an incident in Limekiln Road, Pontypool, at around 6.30pm on Wednesday 6 July, after a boy and a girl fell from the quarry.
"A 15-year-old boy from the Pontypool area was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service.
"A 14-year-old girl from the Blaenavon area sustained critical injuries and was taken to the University Hospital of Wales for treatment by the Welsh Air Ambulance.
"The boy’s next of kin have been made aware and are being supported by specialist officers."
The quarry was once a hub for producing lime for local steel industries. But it was abandoned more than 50 years ago.
Locals say it is a popular place for local children to play.
