Cardiff City's record appearance maker, Phil Dwyer, has died at the age of 68.

The defender was known as "Mr Cardiff City" by fans, having made 575 appearances for the club between 1972 and 1985.

Dwyer also won 10 caps for Wales, scoring the winner on his debut in a 1-0 victory over Iran in 1978.

A statement on Cardiff's official website read: "Cardiff City Football Club is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of the club's record appearance holder, Phil Dwyer, at the age of 68.

"Our thoughts go out to Phil's friends and family at this extremely sad time. Rest in peace, Phil - a true Cardiff City great."

Born in Grangetown in 1953, just a short distance from Ninian Park, Dwyer joined Cardiff at the age of 16.

After making his senior debut in 1972, he went on to become captain and fan favourite at the club, spending 14 seasons as a full-back or centre-half.

After a brief spell at Rochdale, he finished his playing career and started working as a policeman and legal representative.
