Emergency services have been called to a large fire that has broken out in the Welsh town of Newport.

Gwent Police have put road diversions in place as fire crews battle the fire which took hold ON Corporation Road on the east side of the town.

Taking to their social media platforms, the force released a statement urging people to avoid the area where possible.

"Corporation Road, Newport is currently closed between the junctions of George Street Bridge (east side only), Wharf Road and B&Q due to a large fire," officers said.

"Diversions are in place which may cause congestion. Please avoid the area if possible," they added before thanking the public for their participation.

Fire crews have been seen battling the fire, with at least two fire engines being used to tackle the blaze.

Smoke was also seen rising from the scene of the fire as the fire raged through, but was soon quenched as crew began to bring the fire under control.

The fire appeared to be extinguished soon after emergency services arrived at the scene, but there is no information on the scale of the damage the fire caused.
