South Wales Police has announced that they have made more arrests of those involved in the Ely Riots on 22nd May.

The riots started after teenagers Kyrees Sullivan and Harvey Evans died in a crash whilst riding an electric bike. After their deaths, rumours spread online about police involvement in the crash.

The next day, footage emerged appearing to show a police van following the teens shortly before the crash.

South Wales Police, in a statement, says six arrests linked to the riot were made this week, including three men, two women and a 16-year-old boy.

This now brings the total number of arrests following the riot to 27.

In a statement, Detective Chief Superintendent Ceri Hughes said “During the disorder several vehicles were set alight, property was damaged, police officers were injured, and residents were scared in their homes.

“As part of the investigation so far, 432 pieces of body worn footage from police officers has been gathered, as well as several hours of videos posted on social media, drone, helicopter, and CCTV footage.

“We are extremely grateful for the support from the community so far and to members of the public who have provided more than 70 responses using the Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP).”

South Wales Police have referred themselves to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.
