Man dies after being pulled from the sea at Penarth

Three coastal swimmers used flotation buoys to help the man before rescuers arrived.

A man, who was rescued from the sea at Penarth on Monday, has died.

The alarm was raised at around 4:30pm on Monday, with multiple 999 calls reporting a person in the water close to the pier.

The RNLI launched a rescue operation and the man was recovered from the water.

Before rescuers arrived, three coastal swimmers used flotation buoys to help the man.

As well as dispatching an RNLI boat, a rescue helicopter, NHS paramedics, police and the Ambulance Service were involved in the operation.

Despite successfully removing the man from the water, the man has since sadly died.

In a statement, South Wales Police said: "South Wales Police can confirm that a man, who was rescued from the sea at Penarth on Monday, February 24 has died.

"Officers and other emergency service colleagues attended the seafront at around 4.30pm.

"The man’s next of kin has been informed.

"There are no suspicious circumstances.”

Penarth RNLI has thanked members of the public for their efforts in helping the man: "Penarth RNLI would like to thank the members of the public who swiftly called 999, and the three well-equipped coastal swimmers whose actions supported the rescue of the individual.

"If you see someone in difficulty in or near water, please call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
