Large fire breaks out at industrial estate in Bridgend

People told to close their doors and windows

People are being urged to avoid the area near to where a large fire broke out on an industrial estate in Bridgend.

South Wales Fire and Rescue confirmed it had up to 10 fire appliances in attendance at the incident that broke out last night.

Images on social media show bright flames and smoke visible, with some users reporting hearing an 'explosion'.

The fire is understood to have started at a building on Bridgend Industrial Estate, with the first calls made to the emergency services at 8.23pm.

Last night, the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service posted: "Crews are in attendance at a building fire on Bridgend Industrial Estate, Bridgend.

"We are advising persons living in the area to keep doors & windows closed.

"We are advising people to stay away from the area at this time."

In a further statement, issued on Saturday morning, they added: "South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS), alongside South Wales Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), attended an incident at Bridgend Industrial Estate yesterday evening at approximately 20.30hrs.

"On arrival, crews were faced with a well-developed fire at a substantial commercial unit. Multiple appliances and crews attended and Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the night to bring the fire under control at approximately 08:00 hours this morning.

"Resources have been scaled back to an Aerial Ladder Platform and two Water Ladders. Crews remain at the scene and the public are advised to avoid the area until all cordens are lifted.

"SWFRS would like to thank the local community and our blue light partners for bringing this incident to a safe conclusion."

Lat night, Twitter user @owenmorgs posted: "I Hope there are no casualties from the big fire on #Bridgend Industrial Estate. I felt the heat as I passed and could still see the smoke & glow from the flames when I got home."

Posting on 'X', formerly Twitter, @emilybutty said "I can see the fire in #Bridgend on the industrial estate from quite a clear vantage point in Brackla.

"It’s massive, the smoke is horrendous and I’m grateful to our emergency services for the long night ahead of them. Hoping everyone is safe and remains safe."

In a post on Facebook this morning, South Wales Police said: "Emergency services are at the scene of a serious fire in Bridgend Industrial Estate.

"There are road closures on Kingsway, South Road, Cheapside, and Queens Road. It is expected to remain closed for some time.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible. Delays are expected in the area."

There are no reports of any casualties.
