Explosion reported at Monmouthshire defence firm site

There has been an explosion at a site belonging to defence firm BAE systems in Monmouthshire.

South Wales Fire and Rescue say they were called to the BAE Systems Glascoed site at 10:49 am on Wednesday.

A BAE Systems spokesperson has told us the explosion was caused by one of their munition shells in one of their buildings on the site.

In their statement, they said “We can confirm that there was an incident at our Glascoed facility in Wales this morning.

"Tried and tested safety protocols were immediately enacted and emergency services attended the site. All personnel are accounted for and our emergency response team continues to monitor the facility. 

"We have launched a full investigation.”

They go on to say all personnel are accounted for and there are no injuries.
