A chemical spill at one of the UK's top universities has forced their main building to shut this morning.

Emergency services rushed to Cardiff University with police telling people to avoid the area - with a small number of people checked over by paramedics as a precaution'.

They say it's an isolated incident and are 'confident' there's no risk to health and safety.

A statement from the University said: "We are aware of a chemical spill in the University’s Main Building. This is a contained incident but the building has been evacuated & temporarily closed. Emergency services are currently on site.

"At this stage, there are no reported serious injuries or casualties reported.

"A small number of people are being checked by paramedics as a precautionary measure. Main Building will remain temporarily closed until we are confident there is no risk to health and safety."

The police are urging motorists to avoid the area - and Megabus has been urging passengers to board at Cardiff North Road Friary Gardens instead because of the delays on the roads.

Update: at 16:49 today, the main building reopened to staff and students.
