An 83-year-old woman has died after being attacked by a dog at a South Wales home.

The pensioner was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after police officers were called to a house in Heol Fawr, Caerphilly, just after 3pm on Saturday December 3.

She died in hospital of her injuries in the early hours of Tuesday, Gwent Police said.

An investigation continues and four people arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury have been released on conditional bail, the force added.

A 55-year-old man who suffered minor injuries has been released from hospital.

The dog - a large black XL bully cane corso cross - was seized from the homes by officers and put down.

Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Sedgebeer said: "If you have concerns or any information regarding this dog and its previous behaviour then please do stop and talk with us."

The pensioner is the second person in Caerphilly to have died after being mauled by a dog in just over a year.

Jack Lis, 10, was killed by an American or XL bully dog called Beast after school on November 8 2021.

He was visiting a friend's house in Pentwyn, Penyrheol - less than half a mile away from this month's attack - and suffered "unsurvivable" wounds.

In June, Brandon Hayden, 19, from Penyrheol, and Amy Salter, 29, of Trethomas in Caerphilly, were jailed after admitting owning or being in charge of a dangerously out of control dog.

Jack's mother, Emma Whitfield, accused people with such breeds as wanting "a status symbol".
