Man Jailed for Teen Hit and Run
Colin Williams sentenced for perverting the course of justice
A 54-year-old man from Barry has been jailed for 16 months after he hit a teenager then drove away, leaving him with serious injuries.
Colin Williams failed to stop after hitting the victim and instead left the 16-year-old boy, drove home to check his vehicle, then drove back to the scene of the collision that he knew that he’d been involved in.
Instead of reporting what had happened, he drove back home again and took his car to a repair centre to fix the damage.
Police found remnants of a VW car at the scene, which together with CCTV footage, helped them identify Colin Williams.
The incident happened on December 5th 2020, shortly before 4.10am.
Police were called by the Ambulance Service after a passing Doctor found a 16-year-old boy on the roadside of Port Road East, Barry, alone with serious injuries after being hit by a car.
Upon officers’ arrival, all that was left at the scene were some plastic remnants of the Volkswagen car that Williams was driving.
Detectives were able to use these pieces of plastic to identify the exact make, model, and approximate year of the car. Combined with extensive CCTV enquiries, Williams’ car was identified as the vehicle involved in the collision and officers located it in the repair centre.
He was arrested on December 9th 2020.
Detective Sergeant Lee Christer said: “Colin Williams left a 16-year-old boy on the road with life threatening injuries in the early hours of the morning. It is purely luck that a Doctor was passing by and was able to offer the care and assistance that he needed at that time.
“Williams has been sentenced today not for being involved in a road traffic collision, but for going to great lengths to evade being linked with it. I hope that others can learn from this and make the right decision in a situation such as this.
“I’d like to give recognition to all those involved in investigating this incident, who managed to bring Williams to justice with little more than pieces of plastic left on the road. It is through this dedication that today’s sentence has been achieved.”
Colin Williams was sentenced to 16 months in prison and was disqualified from driving for 20 months at Cardiff Crown Court for perverting the course of justice, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and failing to report a collision.
