A South Wales woman has been sentenced to 15 years and 6 months in jail with a 3 year extension period after admitting the manslaughter of a man at his home in Glyncoch, near Pontypridd.

Carrie McGuinness had pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Steven John Davies having previously denied the charge at Cardiff Crown Court.

She will serve two thirds of her sentence in jail with the final third on licence.

Mr Davies was found dead just after 11am on June 15 at his home. A post-mortem examination confirmed the 39-year-old had died from a stab wound.

Ms McGuiness and Mr Davies had been heavily drinking the night he was stabbed. They had had a physical confrontation that evening. Ms McGuiness says she was so drunk, that she doesn't remember stabbing Mr Davies.

The court heard how Mr Davies's wound became infected after a surface-level dressing was applied to the wound. It's estimated that he died 36 to 48 hours after the injury.

The Judge Mr Justice Kerr said it was clear that Ms McGuiness was a danger to those she was in close domestic relationships with, as she had had previous convictions for assault with actual bodily harm against a previous partner in 2013.

The Judge said 'It's clear alcohol is linked to difficulties in past relationships. The relationship between you was volatile and you used alcohol to cope with your difficulties.

'I accept there was physical and mental abuse on both sides, Mr Davies dependent on alcohol and sometimes violent.'

In a statement, Mr Davies's mother said 'It’s left a massive hole in my life. I feel I am serving a life sentence without my son.

'I miss my son every day, waking up thinking about him and going to bed thinking about him.'
