Cardiff's Queen Street has been ranked the most appealing high street in Britain, according to a new survey by American Express and retail experts GlobalData.
The list, published by The Times, placed the Welsh capital's street at number one, surpassing Gloucester’s central shopping street.
Eastgate Street in Chester secured the third spot, with Church Street in Liverpool and Princes Street in Edinburgh also ranking highly.
London did not make the top ten, with King’s Road in Chelsea coming in at 16th place.
The survey considered high streets in cities with a definable “primary” outdoor shopping street, polling 2,000 people.
Key findings include:
- Retail Variety: An attractive mix of retailers topped the list at 67% of respondents.
- Parking: Good parking was crucial for 62% of shoppers.
- Independent Pubs and Restaurants: 52% valued these establishments.
- Entertainment Options: 36% highlighted the importance of cinemas and theatres.
Researchers praised Queen Street for its variety of retailers, accessibility, and transport links. Its proximity to historical landmarks added to its appeal.
Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street railway stations enhance the street's accessibility, although the survey found stations and green spaces to be less critical for shoppers.
