A man's been taken to hospital with serious head injuries, after reports of a serious assault in a Cardiff park in the early hours of this morning (20 July).

South Wales Police say officers were called to the Sophia Gardens entrance of Bute Park around 1.10am.

The man was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, where he is receiving treatment for injuries which Police say are believed to be life-threatening.

Officers are continuing to investigate the incident, and are now looking for anyone who was in the Castle Street area, between midnight and 2am this morning.

They would also like dash-cam footage.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark O’Shea said: "This was a violent and sustained attack on this man, who has been left with life threatening injuries. To subject another person to violence in this way is intolerable, and we are carrying out a number of lines of enquiries to locate those involved.

"We know a number of people were around the area, and in Bute Park, at the time so if you witnessed the incident, or may have heard what took place, please come forward.

"A Major Incident Room has set up in Cardiff Central Police Station so we are keen to receive any information that might help with our enquiries. Please be assured that anyone who comes forward with information will be treated sensitively."
